I go to the gym daily and do a cardio workout that lasts 55 minutes. It seems to be hard going some days and pretty easy the next. I think food may have something to do with this and was wondering what I should eat to get the best from my workout and how long before I should eat.

Also is it best to drink water or a sports drink and when should I drink them, before, during or after?

You should have carbs prior to your workout and a combo of carbs and protein after. For example, this morning I had a banana and a kiwi, and in a minute I’m having a protein shake (milk, egg and whey) and some oatmeal. Some mornings I have a veggie omelet.

As for hydration, skip the sports drinks. They’re not good for you. Drink water before, during and after. Actually, one of the best things to rehydrate after a hard workout is chocolate milk. It’s a healthy mix of carbs and protein, and milk has more electrolytes than sports drinks.
