I had exercise bikes for years, and consider myself to be somewhat of an expert!

The repetitive, unchanging motion of a bike is good for building the quadraceps and calves, but too much, in my opinion.

I think it's an excellent idea to do both. It keeps the progress going as the body doesn't get used to a routine, and running works all the leg muscles, lower abs, even arms. If you add light weights, it creates even more variety.
References :
http://www.fat-killer.org

If I ride an exercise bike will it help me run faster and longer?
I would like to run faster and farther. I have not exercised since high school (6 years ago). I just decided to start exercising now. I'm not overweight or anything (5 foot 8 & 162lbs). I would just like to get into better shape. So would using an exercise bike in conduction with me running a little bit everyday help more? or is it better to just run and bypass the bike.
